What is a Beginners Class ?
Typically, beginner classes are offered in Spring/Summer each year and these then transition to Beginners and Beyond, then Continuing Beginners as the year progresses.
These classes are aimed at new dancers and no previous dance experience is required. They cover the fundamental steps of FCBD® style dance. This easy to learn style of dance draws inspiration from traditional dances of the Middle East, North Africa and Europe and is now danced all over the world. It typically takes a 10-week term to complete beginners.

Continuing Beginners
These classes are usually a mix of almost new and quite experienced dancers. Beginner moves are practiced and reviewed and some easy choreographies are included, often with a prop – skirts, shawl, basket or flamenco fan. We gently start developing out FCBD improv skills including zilling, learning more moves and leading. Performance opportunities are available for those interested but there is never an obligation to perform. It typically takes a year to work through this level and it includes a lot of fun dances!

Intermediate/Advanced
These classes are for the committed dancer who has been dancing for more than a year and is happy to invest in practice, costumes and performance. In these classes we begin to polish technique, become accomplished FCBD improv dancers and tackle more complex choreographies. It typically takes 2 years to get across the intermediate moves and a lifetime to keep improving! There are plenty of performance opportunities for this group.
Mixed level class plus performance practice
In locations with small class sizes a mixed level class is offered. This class gives the opportunity for new dancers to learn moves while more experienced dancers polish technique and build confidence in leading moves. Classes usually include a continuing beginner level choreography for added interest. Additional class time is provided for dancers with more experience to learn more advanced moves and practice for performance.

What is FCBD®?
FCBD® was created in San Francisco by Carolena Nericcio-Bohlman of FatChanceBellyDance® and is now danced all over the world. Costumes are feminine but strong and look beautiful on women of all ages and body types
“FCBD® celebrates the strength and beauty of women working together as a group. Formatted steps, cues, eye-contact and the familiarity of musical phrasing allow dancers to stitch together an improvisational tapestry each time they dance.”

” I moved to the South coast from Sydney and somehow ended up tribal belly dancing! It makes me smile whenever I dance. It’s fun, challenging, but best of all it’s a safe space with women supporting women in the best way. “
